Your labs came back normal.
That’s not the same as optimal.

A standard lab flags you only once something is already wrong. We read the same blood against optimal ranges — and a physician tells you what to do about it.

The Apex MD Health Score

One number, built by the physician who reads the panels

Most labs hand you a spreadsheet and leave the interpreting to you. Dr. Jim Bowen built our scoring model out of forty years of bloodwork-first practice: every marker weighted against optimal ranges, rolled into a single score, then broken back down by body system so you know where to look first.

  • Scored against optimal, not just normal. A result inside the reference range can still cost you points — because it should.
  • Broken down by system. Renal, metabolic, hematology, endocrine, cardiovascular and micronutrients each carry their own score.
  • Comparable over time. The same model every panel, so the movement between them is real and not a change of method.

01

A score, not a wall of numbers

One overall figure, broken down by body system, so you know where to look first instead of reading forty rows hoping something stands out.

02

Every marker has a trajectory

Two results and you stop guessing. The portal shows the direction and the distance from optimal, not just today’s value.

03

A physician reads what changed

Your provider reviews each panel against the last one and adjusts the protocol — the comparison is the point of testing again.

04

Ask Apex MD AI anything

It reads your bloodwork, body composition and wearables together and answers in plain language, at 11pm when you actually have the question.

Normal is not optimal

Look where “normal” actually sits

A reference range is built from the population that walked into a lab — not from people thriving. Normal sits on both sides of optimal. You can be well inside it and still be drifting the wrong way.

Your result

A standard lab reports this as within its reference range. Against the optimal band it is high, and trending away from it.

A range is not a target

Reference ranges describe where most people fall, including people who are unwell. Matching the middle of that crowd is not a health goal.

Direction beats a single reading

One number tells you where you are. Two tell you where you are going, which is the part you can still change.

A physician reads it, not an algorithm

Every panel is reviewed by a licensed Apex MD provider who decides what, if anything, to do about it.

Your markers over time

A number is a snapshot. A line is the story.

Each marker is plotted against its optimal band, panel after panel. The shaded band is where we want you; the line is where you actually are, and which way you are heading.

Estradiol 75pg/mL Optimal
JanFebMarAprMay

Climbed into the optimal band and held there.

Fasting glucose 86mg/dL Optimal
JanFebMarAprMay

Stable inside the band — which is the goal, not a flat result.

Vitamin D 54ng/mL Optimal
JanFebMarAprMay

Corrected from deficient after a dose change in February.

hs-CRP 0.6mg/L Low risk
JanFebMarAprMay

Inflammation falling steadily — here, down is the win.

What you get back

Every marker comes back with its optimal band, its direction since last time, and what actually moves it.

Renal panel

Creatinine

1.31mg/dL

↓ 0.2 mg/dL vs last result

What this measures

A waste product produced by muscle and cleared by the kidneys. Higher levels may indicate the kidneys are not filtering as well, though results must be read alongside factors like age and muscle mass.

Factors that may affect this marker

  • Protein intake
  • Hydration status
  • Body fat percentage
  • Sodium intake
  • Regular physical activity
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure

Informational only — not clinical advice. Your provider interprets your results in context.

Physician review

Every panel is read by a physician. Every one.

Not an algorithm, not a summary generated from your numbers and sent on. A licensed Apex MD provider reviews your results, decides what matters, and builds the protocol — then reviews the next panel against it.

An Apex MD provider reviewing results with a member by video
01

Read in context

Your age, history, medications and goals change what a number means. The same result is not the same finding in two different people.

02

Acted on, not just reported

A flagged marker comes with what to do about it — a protocol change, a supplement, a retest, or nothing at all.

03

Reviewed again next time

The point of a second panel is the comparison. Your provider reads the direction, not just the latest figure.

Advanced diagnostics

When blood alone won’t answer it

Bloodwork tells you what your body is doing right now. These four answer different questions — how fast you are aging, what you are short of, what you inherited, and what is living in your gut. Add any of them to a program, or start with the one that matches the question you actually have.

Apex MD biological age test
Biological age$399

Biological age test

How fast your body is actually aging, at a cellular level — measured, not estimated from your birthday.

Start here if

You feel older or younger than your years and want to know which, or you want a single number to move and then re-measure.

What you do with it

It becomes the baseline your protocol is judged against. Retested later, it is the clearest read on whether what you changed worked.

Apex MD micronutrient test
Micronutrients$650

Micronutrient test

Hidden deficiencies affecting energy and metabolism, measured inside the cell rather than in serum alone.

Start here if

You are tired, foggy or flat and your standard labs came back unremarkable — the classic “nothing’s wrong” result with something clearly wrong.

What you do with it

It replaces a shelf of guessed supplements with the few you actually need, at doses matched to the gap.

Apex MD genomics sequencing
GenomicsFrom $299

Genomics sequencing

A one-time test that maps your genetic health blueprint — it never needs repeating.

Start here if

You want to know what you are predisposed to before it shows up in blood, or family history has you asking questions bloodwork can’t answer.

What you do with it

It shapes every protocol afterwards — how you respond to certain peptides, nutrients and training loads. Peptide $299 · Lifestyle $399.

Apex MD microbiome gut test
Microbiome$475

Microbiome gut test

The gut ecosystem driving your metabolism, immune response and mood.

Start here if

Digestion, bloating or food reactions are the thing you would fix first, or your metabolic markers will not move despite doing the work.

What you do with it

It targets what to feed and what to crowd out, instead of cycling through probiotics to see what sticks.

All four are included in the Longevity Program Elite. Any of them can be added to a Bloodwork-First program.

Questions

The questions people ask before they start

How is this different from my annual physical?

Your annual physical is built to detect disease after it appears. Functionspan® is built to optimize function before decline shows up — strength, mobility, energy and independence over decades, not just “normal labs.”

I’m overwhelmed by information online. How do I know what’s right for me?

Your plan starts with your own bloodwork rather than a general rule. Comprehensive labs show your hormone levels, metabolic markers, inflammation and recovery indicators, and nutrient gaps — and an Apex MD physician walks you through what they mean in a 30-minute consultation.

Is this safe? Am I taking too many things at once?

Everything is prescribed and monitored by a licensed provider. Peptides and hormone optimization are recommended only if your bloodwork supports them, supplements are matched to your own deficiencies, and quarterly labs track how you respond so your plan can be adjusted.

This sounds expensive. Is it worth it?

Programs start at $129, or $299 for the comprehensive panel. That includes your bloodwork, your physician consult, personalized supplement and peptide guidance, the dietitian program (covered by insurance for 99% of plans) and an InBody scan. Guesswork has a cost too: supplements and protocols your body doesn’t need. Programs are FSA/HSA approved.

I’m already healthy. Do I really need this?

Being healthy now is the best time to start, because this is preventive rather than reactive. After 40, strength, mobility and recovery tend to decline faster even in people who eat well and train. And normal isn’t optimal — standard lab ranges are wide, and bloodwork shows where you actually sit inside them.

Can’t I just figure this out myself with research?

You can read the research. What you can’t do on your own is order and interpret a full panel, prescribe where it’s warranted, and adjust every quarter as your numbers move. That is the difference between trial and error and a plan with a provider, a dietitian and a clinician behind it.

What if I’m ‘too old’ to start now?

Dr. Bowen’s Functionspan® protocols have helped patients maintain functional capacity well into their 70s, 80s and beyond. Your plan is built around your current capacity and your goals, so where you start is where the plan starts.

How long do I have to stay on this program?

There are no long-term contracts beyond the initial assessment period, and you can cancel any time after three months. Most people continue because quarterly bloodwork shows them what is changing.

I don’t want to be dependent on medications forever.

Medication isn’t the goal — function is. Prescriptions are recommended only where your labs support them, and nutrition, fitness, targeted supplementation and monitoring are central to every plan. As your numbers change, your provider adjusts the plan with you.
